Greetings Evelyn, Some questions and some observations about your posting. 1 What is the source document for Andrew I. Krusan born in Novjard, Russia in 1881? 2 I could not find Novjard either in !881 Russia or modern Latvia which in 1881 was included in Russia. Novjard is not a Latvian name. While Nov is Russian, jard is not Russian either. Could it be that it was miswritten or misread? 3 Have you found the Ellis Island immigration record for Andrew I. Krusan? Andrew is americanized. In Latvian it is most likely Andrejs, and in that time Andrej or Andrei. 4 What is the maiden name of Julia [in Latvian Julija or Jule]? 5 Your posting mentions that Andrew and Julia helped build the Baptist church in Bucks County Pa. and lived there also. Do you know if they were Baptists? Have you contacted minister Ukstins if you can get background info on Andrew from church records? 6 Prior to WWI writing was in germanized Latvian. Latvian last names usually end in s but in the germanized version it does not appear. The germanized version s is the Latvian z as in English zoo. However what normally applies I believe does not apply with Krusan. 7 Latvians were slaves of the Germans for about seven centuries in Latvia. Around 1830 they were in number of places asked to get last names. Those last names usually made reference to some object. Former NHL star Ozolins stands for little oak tree. LPGA star Gulbis stands for swan. The only possibility for Krusan is kruze [cup], but once more I do not think it applies. 8 Last names ending then in an or nowadays in ans with horizontal mark above the a are not infrequent in Latvia and in the main is indicative that the person is from part of Latvia that is called Latgale. Latgale is the eastern part of Latvia. They spoke in dialect most other Latvians could not understand. 9 About a third of Latvia's population resides in the capital city of Riga. A somewhat recent telephone directory has no Krusan descendant. 10 I have records of people in the countryside who requested financial help after Latvia joined the European Union. I checked most of the pagasti of Latgale, found a Jazeps Krusans [horizontal line over both a and a check mark above the fist s in last name -- s with check mark above it is equivalent to English sh] who lives in Sventes pagasts. Sventes pagasts is just east of the second largest city, Daugavpils, of Latvia. I would expect Krusan to be of Catholic faith. Sventes Rome Catholic Church has the phone number 3715422818, maybe 37165422818. You can reach the governing body at padome@svente.lv. 11 The most likely port of departure is Libau [Liepaja in Latvian]. The Baptist movement in Latvia started around 1850 in Libau, spread to Riga, doubt that it spread to Latgale by the departure date. 12 Emigration from Latvia prior to WWI was mainly to avoid death or severe penalty from participating in the 1905 revolution. Some left for greener pastures, mainly Jews. Some left for religious reasons -- Jews and Baptists. The Tsar did not like Baptists. Hope to have been of some help. Bye, Arturs Zageris Notify Administrator about this message?
