Where was John Mezis from in Latvia?
Historically Latvia is divided into four parts -- Kurzeme, Latgale, Vidzeme and Zemgale. Your great grandfather is from Vidzeme. See http://www.daily-tangents.com/Gerboni/
Now Latvia is divided into 26 rajoni -- a Soviet word, I will use district. Your great grandfather is from Valmiera District. The key city in the district is Valmiera, Wolmar in German.See http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valmieras_rajons and http://www.daily-tangents.com/ImageCat/PCL/Latvia/latalge.html The division most important to the people was pagasts. Some translate it parish, I will call it pagasts. There are about 500 pagasti in Latvia. The median pagasts is about 27,500 acre in size and has about 1,150 people. [The mean is 30,500 and 1,500]. For the pagasti in Valmiera District see http://www.valmraj.lv/lv/page/66 and ...66/292 Your great grandfather is from Nauksenu [small v above the s and horizontal line above the e] pagasts. Its northern border is Estonia. Open http://www.naukseni.lv/karte.htm and scroll up and down, right and left and you will see such places as Pugas, Bodnieki, Jauncelmi, Selgas and others. They are names of farms in the pagasts. In USA you write address for farm as 12,345 Smith Road,... in Latvia you use the name of the farm and the pagasts and now the district and LV-xxxx. Maybe one of the farms on the map appears on one of your documents. If not, contact Arnis Ozolins. See http://www.naukseni.lv/cilvekmuzejs1.htm If he is not able to tell you where your great grandfather lived exactly you need to get in touch with National Archives of Latvia. You should examine all of the site www.naukseni.lv
