La Tourette Family Genealogy Forum

hi cousin: i went to france twice to research, and took pictures of the old La tourette castle which sits on top of a beautiful hill overlooks osse-en-bearn, only a few miles from the northern spanish border in the pyrenee mountains. the old homestead in now in ruins, and the villagers stated that it was once owned by a count and countess who were forced to flee because they were protestant. they recognized the name of La tourette, but knew little else of this family. they stated that in the 1500's members of this family held title to other lands, and that they were familiar with King henry of Navarre. i searched the records of this small village and came up with only a few mentions of this surname, one such was a theodore la tourette who was a statesman in the village in the early 1600's, no doubt related, but do not know how. i then went up the gironde, near saintonge and la rochelle france, but had little success in finding this surname there. howver, i did a great deal of research over the years in the new york public library, and the lds library and found early mentions of this surname in french protestant temple records in la rochelle france, some of which went back to the late 1500's. Armorial books dealing with french nobility rarely mentions this family name, however one such name often appears as lievens-tourettes in the alpes maritime region, and this area states that the tourettes family came from the genoa area of italy and that they were knighted. i have other info., and will get back to you in a week or so. hope this helps. ps. i don't know the name of jeans parents, but have a lot of info on the mercereau family.
