I have two pressing questions: 1) Who can provide documentation for linking the Freston Latymer family with our Capt. Robert Latimer? 2) What evidence/documentation exists for when and how our immigrant ancestor, Robert, arrived in America? The only good evidence I have found linking Christopher Latymer from Freston, Suffolk, England to our American ancestors is that of coats of arms. The coat of arms for Capt. Robert listed for him in the book, The Learned Family, is identical to that listed in numerous places for Bishop Hugh Latimer. Their coats of arms and those of other Latymers/Latimers all center around the plain coat commonly listed all the way back to William le Latimer from the late 1100s--"gules, a cross patonce, or." The coat of arms for the Latymer family of Suffolk is quartered with arms from the Wolverstone and Freston families incorporated with seven crosses crosslet (three in the sinister and four in the base with a lone cinquefoil in the dexter, described: "Azure, a chevron between in the dexter chief a pierced 5-foil in the sinister, three crosses crosslet and in base four argent." In my admittedly limited knowledge of heraldry, I believe that the common thread of the crosses is significant, however, as descendents added labels and charges as "differences" from the patriarch's "plain coat." Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this so I won't pursue this line of thinking. Other links from England to America see to come only from personal genealogical files, most of which list Robert as Christopher's son. Is there documentation of that relationship? Maybe I've just missed it, but I cannot find any source documentation for that link. Another thing that bothers me is that Christopher Latymer's "son" is often listed as being born in 1603, which seems a bit unbelievable, as Christopher was more than likely born from around 1517 to 1520 or so. When Visitations of 1561 was taken, the only child of Christopher Latymer and Eliza (Elizabeth?) Wingfield was listed as Anne. I am well aware of the fact that Visitations often didn't list all children, but I've found no other documentation of Robert as a child of theirs. I've also found numerous ancestral files that seemingly arbitrarily add another Robert with no birth or death dates listed (which makes more sense due to the question raised about the dates above), but again--what documentation is being used? Regarding Robert's arrival in America, does anyone have documentary evidence of dates, etc.? ANY help in putting these pieces of the puzzle together will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Lee Ann Latimer Langston Notify Administrator about this message?
