Here is the lowdown on Reverend Jason Lathrop, born in 1794 in Ma, and a son of John Lathrop born in 1757 and Sarah Cook born in 1755.
On my tree I had two Rev Jason Lathrops, call them #1 and #2.Jason #1 was born in Ma and living in various towns in Oswego County NY until about 1834 and Jason #2 living in Wisconsin starting with the 1850 census and also born in Ma.The more info I found about each of these men the more they seemed opposites to each other despite the fact that they had picked up the title of Reverend and both being born in Ma.Also, the information for the two did not overlap as far as years go.
From old newspapers in 1833 I found out that Jason #1 published an advertisement in the Oswego, NY press that "advertises his wife as a run-away and cautions the public against trusting her".Also in that paper "A correspondent of the same paper answers the advertisement, and alleges that she is an estimable lady and a member of the church, and that her husband had treated her with cruelty.A committee of the church, convinced of the property of her conduct, had offered to support her."This information was found in several New England states papers.
Later that year from several newspapers I found the following:
"The Oswego papers contain an account of a Reverend Jason Lathrop, having been discharged from communion with the brethren of his church, in consequence of having committed the "high offense of criminal violation of female chastity."The male members of his church held a meeting, and adopted the following resolution:--"
"Resolved, That we withdraw the hand of Fellowship from Elder Jason Lathrop for the high offense of criminal violation of female chastity, under very aggravating circumstances."
"And in order to give further notoriety to this pious Elder's transactions, a council of ministers and lay brethren was held at the meeting house of the first Baptist Church in Oswego, to deliberate on the subject--when the following proceedings were had:"
"Charge preferred--Criminal violation of female chastity under very aggravating circumstances. The evidence was abundant--the case a plain one--and we are obliged to say that we no longer fellowship him as a Minister of the gospel."
"Resolved, That this result of the council be signed by the moderator and clerk, and published in the Free Press, and that we invite all editors to insert the same in their papers."
The editor of this Rhode Island paper continues with his thoughts, ie. more condemnation, for several more paragraphs.
In the book "Samuel Bullen and some of his descendants" we find this:In December of 1834, which would be about fifteen months after Jason's expulsion, we find him at a meeting of the "Western Immigration Association" where he was drafting the constitution for this association. This occurred in Hannibal, Oswego, NY.
In the book "Memoirs of Milwaukee County" there is a short bio for a John Watson Gary and in the bio it says that he attended a "private academy at Hannibal, then conducted by Rev Jason Lathrop, at a later date well known in Wisconsin".This would have been around 1834 I think.
I think this pretty much nails down the fact that the two Rev Jason Lathrops are actually one man.Apparently he learned a lesson since there is quite a lot of information available on Rev Jason Lathrop while he lived in Wisconsin and I did not find any misconduct there.
You might be interested in who this unfortunate first wife of Jason was.In the book "Job Judkins of Boston and his descendants" by Elizabeth Littlefield Judkins it says that "Susanna Judkins married Jason Lathrop and which it probably ended in a divorce. It also says that her sister Polly Judkins married Jason's brother Ruel Lathrop.
I have traced the descendents, well, to the grandchildren, of these two brothers so if you are interested in this info please let me know.
