Many, including myself, have been trying for many, many years to find out who were the parents of one of my ancestors who wa named NELSON LASLEY.
Recently I contacted the CLAN LESLIE SOCIETY and asked for their help in trying to solve the mystery of who his parents were. They could not tell me definitively who his parents were, but they did share some very interesting information. Perhaps someone else can make more out of this that I have been able to do so far. But it seems to be a very promising lead to me. It seems particularly interesting to me because Nelson Lasley named his eldest known son WILLIAM.

I am a volunteer for the Clan Leslie Society. My duties are primarily to
format and index the CLSI member genealogies, to collect genealogy material,
to deal with the Odom Library which houses the CLSI archives and to answer
member questions using the above mentions resources. I do not do personal
research.
I'm sorry to say that there are very few Lasley's that are members of the
CLSI so my resources are limited but I think I might be able to help you. I
have a member genealogy for a James Lasley who was born abt. 1810 in
Kentucky to Joseph Lasley and Sally Case [obituary: name spelled Lesley].
James; son, Joseph, was born in Putman Co., IN. He was married and his son
William S. Lasley was born in Scott Co., KY. Sometime in his lifetime,
Joseph moved to Boone Co., IN.
I have another genealogy which appears to be from this same family but whose
descends spell their name Leslie. It starts with a James Leslie, b. 1810 in
Pike Co., KY. He died in 1859 in Indiana. It mentions one son, Nelson B.
Leslie who was born in 1848 in Boonville, Ind.
There is a documented line of Leslies' which settled in Kentucky. I mention
this because descendents of this line have various spellings to their names
including Lasley. They are known as the Bluestone Leslies'. A William Lesley
arrived in New York City with a brother John about 1755 from either Ireland
or Fifeshire, Scotland. [I found references for both] In "Grip Fast: The
Leslie in History" by Alexander Leslie Klieforth, he tells a story of the
brothers. In brief, William Lesley left NYC and went to Lancaster Co.,
Pennsylvania where he married Elizabeth Buchanan. They left PA and settled
in the Bluestone Area of Virginia. [Refer to: Augusta Co., Montgomery Co.
and Wythe Co.] They had 2 sons John, born 1760 and Robert, born 1763. Father
and sons served in the Revolutionary War in VA. After the war, William,
Robert and later John resettled in Pike Co., Kentucky living in Lower Johns
Creek. The only descendants I have reference to is from Robert and his wife,
Elizabeth Compton but it is incomplete. I have found Lesley/Leslies' in Pike
Co., Floyd Co., and Meade Co., Kentucky from this line. The LDS Family
History Center has a book by Ruth Cleveland Leslie on this family but it is
only available at Salt Lake City.
The Scots are notorious for naming their children after each other. With
your ancestor being Nelson Lasley and the James Leslie mentioned above
having a son Nelson, I think it is something to look into.
