Hello Connie. I don't show LASSEY as a name variant for the surname LASEK, but that doesn't mean a bunch since most Polish surnames were "butchered" during emigration. The "ss" is not gramatically correct in the Polish language since double consonants are not permitted. This is more like the old German as written, and the American "intreptation" as heard. The "y" in the surname is pronounced like the "i" in the English word "pin or bin". It's possible that LASSEY was changed phonetically because it would sound about right (which is the way the recorders wrote the surname during early emigration), but the "k" is rather pronounced. All name variants for the surname LASEK has always included the "k" even when they butchered the surname, that I have seen. Based on this, I would say that LASSEY and LASEK are independent surnames and that LASSEY is actually spelled differently from your ancestors surname as they knew it. Research only will tell.
A note here: Look for a slash through the letter "L" in your surname. This will change everything, although I still don't see a name variant for L~ASSEY. In Polish Onomastics (study of surnames) LAS is the base root of the surname taken from a tree, a plant, or a growing thing. Literally it means "Forest". The sufix "ek" is translated as "little", so you have "little forest". This actually means "son of forest", kinda like you'd call someone little Johnny Smith. Recommend that you email Fred Hoffman (Garu of this kinda stuff) at WFHoffman@prodigy.net and go with what he tells you.
Best ~ Tom
