I read your meaning of what Larter means. Yes, there is one surname book that mentions it's probably a nickname for cheater or deceiver, but I don't think this is entirely correct. I have, as founder of the Larter Family History Society in Suffolk, England, undertaken extensive research into the meaning and origin of this surname. My research has in fact shown it to be a corruption of Laughter, an old English spelling of the Scandinavian word 'lattre' meaning 'a place where animals lay their young'.
