What is to be my true maiden last name is LaRoche I've just found out. My father saw this article in the (june issue) of ebony magazine, about the only black family to have survive the Titanic, the husband parished.
Story goes that he was a nephew to emperior of Haiti Jean-Jacques Dessalines. He was sent to France to study engineering. Married (I believed her to be european/french) Juliette Marie Louise LaFargue-LaRoche had two children pregant with the third, he tried to get work and could not because the times, color men reguardless of educations was denied work. Tired, they decied to head bach to Haiti where he could provide a good quality of life for his family, he booked his family on a French liner, the capt. told the head of the family that his wife and children could eat at the dinner table, but not him. He then exchanged tickets for the Titanic. That's where that story ends, but not before I add this...
When reading this article, it was my father's wife who discovered it, and when looking at the photo she almost fell out of her chair. The photo looks just like him. She knew it couldn't be, because the time frame (it's just not 1912).
My father's name is Robert Richard he took his mother's married last name.My father's father name is Jacque/Jacques LaRoche. His father's name is George LaRoche.
If you can help me make that link that would be so awesome. I've always wanted to know my heritage, now I feel I know myself alittle bit better...
