It REALLY hit the Lawson's hard, cause many of them had been setting up towns and immigrating people over here for years on end. They were often accused of being Tories rather they were or not. Lost everything they had many times. Let's face it, they don't say "War is Hell" if it weren't to them one on way or another. As far as George Washington goes, they had to talk long and hard to even get him involved in it. Thomas Jefferson never wanted to really be remembered for being an signer of the Declaration of Independence as he did being the college President of William and Mary College, nearly all them lost
most of their wealth because of the Rev. War effort. George
Rogers Clark died at his sister's house, penniless and still asking for his men to be paid. It was not all glory.
Accused "Tories" were being tied to the hand-cars pulled by horses in New York after the war, (later called "riding the rails") to the point that even George Washington stepped in and asked peole to lay down their arms and to mend the country into one people again.
