First of all there are two James Larkins in Pa.One was in Lancaster County and the other was in Somerset.Several of us who do trace to William E. Larkins are pretty sure that our James Larkins was the one in Somerset and that the James Larkins married to Catherine Gerlinger was not William E.'s father. We have several reasons for this assumption and think for one thing that the William from the Catherine Gerlinger and James Larkins was another William who is known to have been married to Luess Packer at the time that William E. was married to Rachel Reed. This information was not only via DAR records but records from Harrison County, Ohio.Second, the Catherine Gerlinger and James Larkins family had too many sons to match the Somerset County census of 1810 but more closely matched the Lancaster County census of 1810.Third, the Catherine and James Larkins family had many, many ties to Lancaster County--she was born there and they were married there and he mustered out of the service there. We believe that two James Larkins men served in the Rev. War.We think one was a private and the other was a sergeant despite the fact that some researchers are trying to say it was one and the same individual.Records indicate that one was severely wounded at Bacon Ridge. It is highly unlikely he then went back into the service a few months later. I wanted to believe that William E. was a part of the Catherine and James Larkins but am not convinced based upon the Luess Packer and William Larkins information. As Harrison County, Ohio is where the Catherine and James family moved and William E. and Rachel Reed went to another part of Ohio altogether, I feel that the William married to Luess Packer with records in Harrison County, Ohio is probably the William in the Catherine and James family and not my families William E. Larkins. However, I am always open to new information and valid proof but based upon a lot of research from several people in my line am not willing to accept as fact that William E. was a part of the Catherine and James family without much better evidence at this time even though this leaves our line still searching for the James Larkins who was William E.'s father.
