My 3rd great grandfather was a Joseph C. LARIVIERE who was b. 1821/22 in Canada, m. Margaret _______ who was b. abt. 1822 in Canada. They came from Canada to the US in 1855 (stated date from 1900 US census for Balto. Md.) with the following children:
Joseph b. abt 1845 in Canada
Emma b. abt 1848 in Canada
Augustus C. H. b. 14 Nov 1847 in Montreal.
After arriving in US they had the following children:
John b. abt 1851 (curiously, 1860 Brooklyn US census states birthplace as being Missouri)
Jane b. abt 1854 New York, NY
Catharine b. abt 1857 New York, NY
JOSEPHINE b. abt 1859 New York, NY
You'll notice that both Augustus and his father, Joseph have a middle initial of "C". The middle name of Clermont was passed down through the generations from Augustus' son, Joseph Clermont Rivers to his grandson, William Clermont Rivers, Sr. to my brother, Wm. Clermont Rivers, Jr.
The immigrant Joseph mentioned first, had a son named Joseph (mentioned as first born above), who named one of his sons Clement.
The descendants of the early Joseph lived for decades in Brooklyn, with a mention as early as in the 1860 US census for Brooklyn, NY. Some of the Rivers family members still live in the area. My leg of the family moved to Baltimore, Md. as early as 1883 where Augustus is listed in the Baltimore City Directory.
Perhaps your Josephine comes from this Rivers family. According to a webpage of the American-French Genealogical Society, Clement is also used as Clermont.
I'd love to hear from you. I've managed to work on my line with a Rivers cousin who lives in NY. I have more info. on the immigrant Joseph on my website "Sauerbraten, Tea Time & Scones" at http://www.playpenn.net/beejhttp://www.playpenn.net/beej . Look for the earliest Joseph under the surname Lariviere.
