Hi Helen

THat is VERY interesting. Seems like there was a Henry in Mobile AL. Let me check.

Also, gathings, I remember that name. Will have to look. Any way, I think that is really really weird abuot your grandmother snapping like that, sounds like my uncle. Never did tell the secret. If you read on melungeon history, they ALL had secrets in their lines. They were running from the discriminations back then, not so bad at first, early 1700's I think and certainly before, but later it came in hard, racism I mean, with slavery, so most of our older folks wouldn't talk about color, jsut clammed up I think. It would take 5 pages to tell you about my Joseph's line and the incidents and things that I've learned and kind of figured out, well, feel like I have if I'm on the right track .

Joseph's son Joseph was in Oakdale LA, not sure the county, upper part though, where's bugaloosa or whatever? Joseph went there not wanting folks to think he was French so I was told and my aunts all are saying this line was Irish, but I dont' think so, that is, unless it was way before the mulatto's, maybe they came here to America as Irish Indentured servants then mixed with whatever other race, Anywya, so I've been reading and think maybe he didnt' want to be classified as creole since outsiders were rather categorized in LA, as mixed if not born there and raised as French, full blooded. I think that is right, how I udnerstand it anyway.

Well, funny, you have Henry and Thomas like this line and my grandfather's dau was Louise. Still haven't found out where Cecile comes from. I have a website at

if you 'd like to look at it and see photos, let me know if any resemblence but I have one of the Joseph Lantern grandson, RUfus and John if you'd like me to send that photo. That was Thomas's line, my Henry's brother. They married into the darker races and also went to IL, my Joseph ended up just about everywhere they did, but he was white after he grew up, passed I suppose, his cousins didn;t but they continued marrying in the mixed lines , most, but I've been told a few of them went north passed as white and didnt' look back. Sad to lose fmaily that way but I guess back then it was necessary as they were SO discriminated against, coudlnt' always own land, coudlnt' get marriage license etc.

Let's see

I have info that a Henry lanton b 1802 in alabama 1850 cnesus, and Temperance his wife, age 37 children Henry l.D? looks like, amanda p, francis m, DOctor, General? Adda M, Martha Ann, (i have a martha, henry's dau martha j) GEorge and Elizabeth,

Who are they? Dont' know what county that was?! can't beleive i dont' have that.

Also, downloaded an escambia fl lantrom family, George W. Lantrom or Lantron, I say it depends on how one writes curive "n" and "m"s think about it. Our line became Lantrum, census said Lantron in 187-0 but thereafter lantrum. or Lantrom? hmm. Anyway, that George in Fl, his wife was Acenia Williams, they married dec 10 1880. know them?. Where were your florida folks?

Also am looking for a Victoria Lantrum in nuxobee Missisippi, she married Richard Sanders haven't found them on cnesus anywhere yet, they married 1873 nuxobee. we have rumours there is a connection there somehow, dont' see that spelling much, her age was right to be my joseph's sister, so far I only have him with one sister, can't find her either after 1850. But his father was old enough to have had other children before him, and his sister. There are other Lnaton's there, listed as black, working in TN. Ever run into this Victoria?

Also , there are laxtons in tn, i wonder might they be kin to ours as well. Lintrum's linton's etc, this surname lanton/lantron has been seen SO many ways in the past. ALso, i think many altered the surname for reasons of hiding from their past, I guess that had to do what they had to do to survive back then. Tough times I'm sure. Some say they had a choice but if they could pass as white, and have life a little easier for them and their future family and grandchildren I guess that's what they did.

Also, I'm in GA, AND freezing at the moment, haha. ICE. You should be getting all this cold in Montana, not me! lol.

Love to see a scan when ya CAn!

What else you know?
