My place in the Lannon descendancy.

Keith,
As a now very minority variant of L*nn*n, I can just repeat my experiences. I started off looking for Lennans but subsequently concluded that I must also look at Lennons, since about 25% of my Lennans are officially classified there (including my two children). A number have also ended up as Lannans and a few Linnens. If you look at the actual early entries (1864-1900) you will find about 25% of people making their marks. One cannot really expect them to correct the clerks recording their names. In my transcription of Lennan Dublin entries, I am now in the process of expanding this to all possible forms of spelling the name (although will exclude Lenihan and variants). I have also gathered together the incidence of variants by county for several selected years and hope to analyse this and post it at some stage. First impressions are that the movement over the years is to the L*nnon form. Thus Lannans become Lannons and Linnensand Lennans become Lennons progressively over the period. There are still a few significant variants such as Lennane/Lenane in specific areas. On Lannons, while about 1/8 in occurrence terms that of Lennon, still significant. I do not have a recollection of a significant Wicklow pocket, but that awaits me doing some work. Earlier Irish records would suggest Lenan/Lennan was the predominant variety (but my concentration on Dublin may bias this). I have already posted the URL of my web page where there is a discussion of the various varieties. As said above I hope to expand on this.
