Notes from "The Lannings";compiled by Jeannette Tyson, Toronto, Ont, Canada; Feb 1990 page 49.
Sussex Marriage Register in Marriage Book A sussex Co. Hall of Records in Newton NJ says John Lanning to Sarah Tuttle. It is generally thought the clerk made a mistake for in the 24 March 1817 issue of the Sussex Register (newspaper) it says that John Lanning married Sarah Fuller. Perhaps Tuttle was a middle name or her mother's name?

Sarah was a 1st cousin to Jacob Fuller who married Sarah Lanning and to Lydia Fuller who married Isaac M. Lanning, but they were each born to three different Fuller brothers.

In the 1850 census through the 1870 census Sarah lived in the household of her son, Johiel Lanning, in Harrison Township, Wells County, Indiana.
It is possible that she is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Wells county IN

Obituary of Sarah Lanning Hughes, daughter of John and Sarah Fuller Lanning

Bluffton Chronicle
Bluffton, Indiana, Wednesday, October 12, 1910

GRANDMA HUGHES SUMMONED BY DEATH

Aged wife of Robert Hughes went to join husband in another world

Grandma Hughes, the aged wife of the late Robert S. Hughes, died at 5:00 Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Ulmer, 3mi. south of Bluffton. She had been a great suffer from asthma for a number of years. On the day she died she suffered with the asthma a great deal, but toward the evening grew better. She called her grandchildren, Harry and Justine Ulmer, to her bedside, and said, “Goodbye Harry” “Goodbye Justine. You have all been so good to me.” Her daughter then came into the room and persuaded her to lie down. She did and within a few minutes she had passed away, calm and peaceful, without a death pang. She bid her daughter goodbye, saying “goodbye, dear ones. You have all been so good to me.” These were her last words on earth.

Mrs. Hughes was almost 90 years old, 60 years having been spent in Christian service as a member of the M. E. Church. She was the mother of six children, two sons and four daughters, one of the sons a minister, the other a professor of music. All are deceased except one daughter, Mrs. John Ulmer, with whom she has made her home for thirteen years. After her own children died there were six little orphans left and grandma opened her arms and doors and took the little ones in and raised them to manhood and womanhood. She lived to see them all married and settled.

She was one of this early pioneers of this country. She and her husband settled on their home farm, where she died, 62 years ago, when this country was a vast wilderness. They labored hard and built for themselves a fine home which they enjoyed for many long years. But now they are both gone to reap their reward in that heavenly home. She left behind her many bright evidences of her acceptance of Christ.

Farewell mother, we will not weep for the, for thou art now where thy spirit often longed to be .

Mrs. Hughes was a native of Guernsey county, Ohio. She was born on February 21, 1822, the daughter of John Lanning and Sarah Fuller, both of whom are natives of New Jersey. Among the grandchildren referred to above are Mrs. Hugh Dustbman and Mrs. Verne Gilliom of this city.

The funeral services were held Friday morning at 10:00 AM at the Bethel Methodist Episcopal church, reverend E.B. Brown officiated.
