Martin Lanning was listed in the 1850 Herkimer Co, NY, Town of Russia Census as a 28 year old male laborer, born NY, enumerated with Wheeler Schuyler, farmer. Martin apparently invested in a parcel of land in Farmington Twp., Warren Co., PA for on 27 February 1865, he sold to a man named Orange White. Martin is named in the deed as being from the Town of Russia, Herkimer Co., NY.
My maternal grandfather, Martin James Laning was born in 1863 in Warren County, Pa as the son of Richard C. Laning and Susan (Woodard) Laning. I recall my grandmother relating that my grandfather had once been visited by a cousin, Martin Lanning, from NY State, and that it was confusing to be around the two of them at the same time because of the similarity of names.
My questions follow: Just who was the aforementioned Martin? Did he have a son, Martin Jr., who would have been near my grandfather's age (b.1863)who may have visited PA ? I am especially interested in learning about this because I am trying to establish proof of the ancestry of my great grandfather, Richard C. Laning, born 1830, Town of Russia, Herkimer Co., NY. If I can find information concerning these Herkimer County Martin Lannings, and they were indeed cousins of my grandfather, Martin's, I may find clues which would assist me in my search. Conrad Lanning who died 15 March 1849 in Herkimer County, NY, left several children, with two sons listed as living in Sugar Grove Township, warren Co., PA. Their names were: Jesse ands Robert Lanning. When my great grandfather, Richard C. Laning first came to PA, he went directly to Sugar Grove Twp., and this indicates a possibility that he was somehow connected to these two Lanning men, perhaps a brother or nephew. Any light shed on these matters would be appreciated. Gordon A. Sutton
