Ann, This is response to your long but interesting reply to a posted note by Lee. This is in answer to the first line of your posting of Jan 3, 2006. In case you haven't found it already. I believe that I have proof that Elizabeth Washington(1689-1773) married Sampson Lanier(1682-1743).
Marriages of Virginia Residents Vol II, Part I, Surnames K-L, Page 12 Lists :
Lanier, Robert (her brother-in-law JL-)m. Elizabeth (Washington) Lanier, widow of Sampson(Lanier) and dau . ofRichard (Washington)and Elizabeth (Jordan).
4W(1)35
All Parenthesis except (Jordan) are my inclusions.
In other words After Sampson Lanier died his wife Elizabeth Washington Lanier, married Sampson Lanier's brother Robert. But this is still proof that she was in fact the wife of Sampson Lanier, (the senior one).
It will take me a while to digest the rest of your posting. But basically that Washington line of which you write is not the Elizabeth line until it reaches back a number of generations. There were two John Washington's who imigrated out of England about the same time. They were first cousins but I believe they were both descended from Lawrence Washington from the 1500's to 1600's.
Good luck and happy hunting!
Janet Lingan,
P.S. I am descendant of Elizabeth Washington and Sampson Lanier and have just finished proving it. It is mostly through the female lines.
