I sent an email to Elizabeth Castle, Fort Charles - UK and asked if they had a better pic of the Lanier coat of Arms on the wall of the powder store, built by Sir John Lanier who was Governor of Jersey- A smaller island In The UK - between 1679 and 1684. Pic is at http://www.jerseyheritagetrust.org/fazers/Laniers%20arms.jpg - I got an interesting reply that follows - Dear Mr Lanier, Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we don't have a clearer picture of the coat of arms of Sir John Lanier that I can send you. I did a Google image search myself and found the same picture, and also the following website on the Lanier family, which has an image of the coat of arms: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fairbanks/lanier/lanier%20home.htm. Fort Charles is actually part of Elizabeth Castle, which is situated on an small island to the south of St Helier and dates from around 1600. You can find more information about the castle here: http://www.jerseyheritagetrust.org/sites/elizabeth/elizabeth.html. I checked in a guide book we have here in our library (Elizabeth Castle by NVL Rybot, Société Jérsiaise, 1986) and found a sketch of the coat of arms on Fort Charles, and it does seem to match the one on the website. The guidebook is actually still available to buy from the website of the Société Jérsiaise, a local studies organization, and I believe that they do ship to the USA. You can find their bookshop here: http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/store/product_info.php?products_id=96 I hope that this helps with your research, Regards, Roland Quintaine Archives Assistant Jersey Heritage Trust Jersey Archive, Clarence Road, St Helier, Jersey JE2 4JY Tel: +44 (0)1534 833300 Fax: +44 (0)1534 833301 Email: roland.quintaine@jerseyheritagetrust.org Jersey's heritage and culture is special.
