Everything I have ever seen written on the children of Thomas Lanier and Elizabeth Hicks has revealed nothing of what happened to their eldest child, Mary, who was called Molly. At the North Carolina State Archives, I recently found a document among the estate papers of Thomas Lanier, dated 7 March 1811, which begins, “James Vaughan, who is the only surviving executor of Thomas Lanier decd, and guardian, Solus, of his unfortunate daughter (Mary Lanier) deaf & dumb from her infancy and is at present about seventy years of age, as he believes...”
