The painting of 'Queen Elizabeth Dancing With Robert Dudley,Earl of Leicester' hangs at Penshurst Place. Beryl Platts' article, 'Pictorial Politics At Penshurst' appeared in Country Life, January 25, 1973. In the article Beryl gives her opinion of who the musicians,in the painting, might be. She thought it possible that the man in the center, on the bass viol, could be Alfonso Ferrabosco. Alfonso Sr. returned to Italy in 1578. It could be Richard Farrant on one of the violins. Richard died in 1581. It could be Caesar Galliardello on one of the other violins. The third violinist she doesn't name. The youngest man in the portrait, she writes, could be John Lanier II playing the sabecca, a form of zither. There is no labeling to say she is right or wrong, unfortunately. The painting looks like it portrays the musicians about 1581, my guess.
