As a further follow-up, I have discovered the Robert William LANGRIDGE,born in Mile End Old Town, London in 1864, was more than likely the son of John Rothwell LANGRIDGE and Amelia Emma NEWELL. John died in 1873 and Amelia married William BRICKLEY in 1879, thereafter having further children. Amelia and William BRICKLEY (aka BERKLEY)emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1885 - William Robert LNAGRIDGE, her first born son, did not accompany them, although Amelia LANGRIDGE jnr and Arthur Walter LANGRIDGE did. William Robert LANGRIDGE was also absent from the household for the 1881 UK Census; he would have been 17y and probably worked his way to South Africa when his mother married again. He does not appear on any passenger lists I have examined, although could have travelled out as a soldier during the Zulu Wars, which were fought from 1881; there was a Cpl John Langridge in the Royal Infantry who died on 22 January 1881 at the Battle of Isandlwana, but Robert's Dad is said to have died in 1873 - any other ideas, anyone ????
