Odds are that your Thomas Langley of Kent Co., DE went there from Gloucester or Salem Co., NJ.Have been researching the Langley-Longley family of NJ, MD and northern VA.
The earliest extant Langley document in NJ was a 1699 deed from Susannah, relict (widow) of John Langley of Gloucester Co.
Next there are several NJ references to a Thomas Langley, who was probably the son of John and Susannah. He died and his widow Mary went to Cape May Co., NJ.
As early as 1720s there was a Joseph Langley who by 1731 married Mary Campbell (daughter of John Campbell according to the latter's PA probate) and was living in Hunterdon Co., NJ.By 1750s they had a son Joseph, both Jr. and Sr. on legal documents in Hunterdon Co., as well as a James and Thomas Langley.I know of no way to establish James and Thomas's ages.By abt 1763 Joseph Sr. & Jr. disappeared from Hunterdon Co. NJ records.
About same time Joseph (Jr.) went to Loudoun Co., VA (my ancestor -- his son William said on Revolutionary Pension application he was born 1761 in NJ), and Thomas showed up back in Gloucester Co., NJ records.Apparently there were several generations of Thomas Langleys in NJ, that and Joseph being the most popular names (of record).
There was a James Langley, Quaker accepted on certificate from Southampton M.M. in England, arrived in NJ abt 1725.A family of Langleys in Frederick Co., VA (which borders Loudoun Co.) intermarried with a PA Quaker whose wedding was witnessed by James Langley. The earliest Langley in Frederick Co. was John abt 1765.
Our Loudoun Co., VA family took the spelling of Longley.Joseph (Jr/Sr) was there by 1764, had a son Joseph, and possibly other Longley/Langleys who arrived there after Revolution were sons or nephews or cousins. We believe Benjamin Longley of Baltimore, MD by 1740s was prob. a son of Joseph, Sr. and Mary Campbell.
