Lady Nancy Astor was the butt of a few witticisms herself.
She supposedly accused Sir Winston Churchill of being drunk,very drunk. His reply "yes,I am drunk,but you are ugly,very ugly,and I will be sober in the morning".
Another time she told Sir Winston that "if you were my husband,I would put poison in your tea. His reply: Madame,if you were my wife,I would drink it.

Incidentally,I descend from Daniel Witcher who died in 1815.
