I really appreciate your response. I had concluded that the Joel Langham who appears in the DeSoto and Marshall county censuses is the one I'm trying to trace (i.e., the one who turns up in Arkansas married to my 3-g-grandmother, Rebecca (Gay). They certainly were good at eluding federal census takers, however. Since posting the message to which you responded I have confirmed that Joel and Rebecca were the parents of Amanda, born in 1846 in Woodruff Co, AR, but I can't find them in the 1850 federal census anywhere. Like Rebecca, Joel clearly had a prior spouse by whom he had children, and it seems entirely possible that your Delilah (or Johnny or Mary) may have been among them if he divorced his first wife or she died and the children, for whatever reason, parted company Joel when he married again. Will keep in touch if I learn more.
