Langan family from Mayo, late 1800's
This is some research I did into the Langan family.I did this in 1989 and have not really touched it since. It all comes from word of mouth from my older relatives, so the accuracy of it might have faded as peoples memories faded :-)
They lived (amongst other places) in Foxford, Mayo, Ireland. My mother thinks that some of her maternal uncles and aunts emigrated to the USA
How do I fit into all this…My Mother is Delia Mary Doughty (nee Langan)born 28/11/1928 (the dates are all in dd/mm/yy order) in Parkgate, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.
Her grandparents were Partick Langan
(a mountain farmer from Mayo, also a rate collector, married twice, all the offspring from his first marriage emigrated to the USA.
His second marriage was to Bridget King (my g-grd-mth), from Kinleochtan Mayo, she was 17 when they married.
Patrick had a sister Nellie who married a John Roach)
Patrick/Bridgets children were (in order I believe):
Martin, Alice, Lizzie, James, Harry, John (Jack), Cecelia.
The first three, all born in the early/mid 1880’s, emigrated to the USA.The girls both died in Chicago. My mother believes the head of the fire service in Chicago was a Langan, the son of Martin – though this might not be reliable !!
James in my maternal grd-fthr.
(born 1/8/1888, registered dob 11/9/1888 (they missed the 6 week registration window), he came to England from Clonish, Birr around the start of WW1 and worked as a mining surveyor in the Yorkshire coalfields.
He was married twice, the first time to Mary Ann Flannery (died of TB in Doncaster, S. Yorks 6 months after the wedding)
His second marriage was to Honora Doughan from Roscrea, Ireland. She was christened Elanora, registered an Honora, but was known as Nora, she was my maternal grd-mthr).
Harry died in Castlebarr, Ireland in 1975.
John, known also as Jack, married Alice Ogden and lived in Wombwell S. Yorks.
Cecelia married John Mulroy. They had 6 children (Mary, Martin, Jim, John, Patrick (Pat) and Bridie). She died of pneumonia 6 weeks after the birth of Bridie.Sadly both John and Bridie were lost on the Lockerbie plane.
My mothers sibling order is:
Patrick (catholic priest, b Tipperary 28/01/1919)
Sarah, known as Sadie (a nun, ordained Sr. M. John Fisher)
Nora (b 14/12/1924, married Hubert Heenan)
James (Jesuit priest, b 31/10/1926)
Delia Mary (my mother, b 16/11/1928, m Walter Doughty, has 6 boys, I’m number 2)
Micheal Elphege (b 4/7/1930 (or maybe 1931), d December 1993, named after his mothers first cousin Canon Micheal Elphege Doughan OSB)
I could go on, and expand the Mulroy offspring line or parts of the Doughan family.
I hope this is of use to someone out there. If you find that you have links into this then would you like to let me know.
My mail ID is, for the foreseeable future, [email protected] longerterm mail Id would be my eldest sons hotmail id of [email protected].
Best wishes
Martin Doughty, Grafham, Huntingdon, England
