Donna;
Sarah Landrum was the daughter of Joseph Landrum, Jr., born about 1771 in Chatham County, North Carolina, and died August 1849 in Jackson County, Georgia. Joseph Landrum, Jr. was the son of Joseph Landrum, born about 1730 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and died about 1803 in Warren County, Georgia. We do not know the names of their wives. Joseph Landrum, Jr. did marry a second time to Sarah Ross (maiden name "Hewitt"). They married January 17, 1841 in Jackson County. Sarah was the widow of John Ross and the mother of three sons by John.
Joseph Landrum, Jr. was the first cousin of the Thomas Landrum, who married Nancy (or Mary) Bell. How did you determine Sarah's middle name was "Bell"? I know her middle initial was "B", but I don't believe I ever saw her full name in any document.
As for Samuel Huff Ellison, I have never been able to determine his parents or siblings. We know he was born August 14, 1790, and all census records indicate he was born in Georgia. So the question is; where were his parents living when he was born? He was not born in Jackson County!
Jackson County was created February 11, 1796, from a portion of Franklin County, so Samuel's parents would have been living somewhere other than Jackson County when he was born in 1790. They may have been living in the part of Franklin County that became Jackson County. Franklin County was an original county, created from Creek and Cherokee lands on February 25, 1784. I did find evidence of Ellisons in Franklin County, including a deed dated October 25, 1806 that mentioned a William Ellison.
Paul Graham's Book "1805 Georgia Land Lottery - Persons entitled to Draw" is a good substitute for the lost 1800 and 1810 Georgia Census. This book contains the names of most (not all) white males age 21 or older as of May 1803. Nine Ellison men are listed, three from Greene County, two from Burke County, and four from Jackson County. One of these men was probably the father of Samuel Huff Ellison.
The four from Jackson County were; Robert, Samuel, Watson, and William. The "Samuel" cannot be Samuel Huff Ellison. The Samuel listed in the lottery would have been born before 1782. One of these four from Jackson County is probably the father of Samuel Huff Ellison.
The 1820 census for Jackson County lists Samuel Ellison as head of household. The female listed in his household, born before 1775, may be his widowed mother. The Jackson County Index of Ordinary Records, 1796-1814. lists a Robert Ellison (deceased), recorded February 24, 1804. I could not find a will for this Robert Ellison, or any other Ellison in Jackson County. This Robert is probably the same Robert who registered for the 1805 Land Lottery in 1803. This Robert may be the father of Samuel Huff Ellison, but that is just speculation on my part.
I do believe Tabatha Ellison, who married David Lay, is the sister of Samuel Ellison. She is probably the other older female listed in the household of Samuel Ellison on the 1820 and 1830 census. Tabitha Lay is listed in Samuel's household on the 1860 census for Fayette County.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if you find any more info. on the Ellisons.
Jack
