Francis Landrum was born in Essex County, Virginia September 19, 1739.He last appears in Essex County records in November 1763.The same year and month, he purchased land in Lunenburg County, Virginia. The last record of Francis in Lunenburg County is in 1786.He next appears in Loudoun County, Virginia, where he resides at least from 1787 until 1793.He purchases land in Louisa County, Virginia in September 1794, where he lives until his death in 1807.
The items in his inventory, filed in Louisa County in 1808, suggest that he was a farmer.
I have not found any record suggesting that Francis participated in the Revolutionary War.Francis appears fairly regularly in Lunenburg County records from his purchase of land there in November 1763 until April 1776.The next record I found for Francis in Lunenburg was when he sold his land there in October 1786.
An advertisement in the Virginia Gazette, dated 27 Nov 1779, shows that Francis Landrum is among those who have a hogshead of tobacco, lying inspected, but ‘not applied for’ for over two years.
His absence from the Lunenburg records, and his unclaimed tobacco suggests to me that Francis may well have gone elsewhere during the Revolutionary War period.
The Virginia Commission on Archives and History of the Methodist Church has no record of Francis Landrum Sr. as an ordained minister.Research from Randolph-Macon College said there were many ministers in the early period who were not ordained, but did preach.I feel that the July 1837 ‘Dear Thomas’ letter that identifies Francis as a “local preacher” probably most accurately describes Francis’ role.
I have compiled an annotated list of documents in which Francis’ name appears which I would be happy to share with you, if you are interested.
