I don't think the census takers were illiterate....I mean they were certainly able to write names down. However, the general population was largely illiterate and thus didn't have any idea how their own names were spelled. They went by sound, and we all know how sounds can vary!So when the census taker wrote down a name all he had to go on was the pronunciation the individual gave him.
I've seen Landrum recorded in the census as Landrew !!!.All I can figure is that the Landrum individual must have had a real scottish accent....and prononced it Landroom but without much emphasis on the "m".
And then we have the problem with census transcribers.......PLEASE!!!!I know a cursive "L" looks a lot like "S", but to make Landrum into Sanderson is pretty extreme. And yes, I've found this transcription....on a well known internet genealogy site.
I'm off my soapbox now.
