Laura Landon White Warhurst Additional Information Since my posting to this forum last June, I have found additional information regarding Laura Landon. The Federal Census of 1850 for Franklin County, Blendon, Ohio, district 38, lists Dr. George W. H. Landon, age 45, born in New York, and his family of seven children but does not show that he is married. Presumably, he is a widower. This is dwelling number 70. He has a son, C.G. who is 19, occupation “artist”; a daughter Caroline M., 17; a daughter, Laura.O, 14; a daughter Laureena (?), 11; a son, Spencer C., 8; a son Chauncey H., 6; and a son, Benj. O., 3. All children born in Ohio. This is the census of July 26, 1850. It is of interest that on the same census page one finds Dr. George Landon's mother,Tryphena Landon, formerly Tryphena Hewitt, a widow, living in dwelling number 73 with a family of Terrance D.Grunes (?). Dr. George Landon's father,Edward Landon, is at this time deceased. In the Federal Census for Missouri, first Ward, city of St. Joseph, Buchanan County, enumerated on the 23rd day of July 1860 we now find Dr. George Landon, born in New York, listed only by his last name "Landon" age 55, occupation "surgeon". He has no value listed for either real estate or personal estate. There is a female designated only as "E." age 34, born in Ohio. A son, "SC" is now 18 and his occupation is "printer". Chauncey H. is now listed as "C. H." and the youngest son is "Oliver. B." there are no other children listed and, presumably, all of the girls are married and out of the house. Caroline would now be about 27, Laura, about 24, and Laureena about 21. This is Butte county, Orovill Township. Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: Ophir, Butte, California; Roll: M653_56; Page: 763; Image: 253. Also in the household of Dr. Landon in 1860 in St. Joseph Missouri, is a 19-year-old female "servant" Mary Long, and a female child 1 1/2 years, Caroline Long. I have not as yet found Dr. George W. H. Landon in later enumerations in any location. St. Joseph, Missouri in 1860 was a hotbed of political struggle and violence. I have not found any record of "Dr. George" joining the military as did his brother, Dr. Chauncey P. Landon in Ohio. A death certificate from the Missouri State Board of Health is probably the most valuable document I have found. It gives Laura's birth date as August 26, 1836 and states that she was born in Ohio, the daughter of Dr. George Landon. On this death certificate, Laura’s name is listed as "Laura Warhurst" because she married Enoch Warhurst after the death of her first husband. Barnsbach UNDERTAKER ADDRESS REGISTRAR H O SIDENFADER 211-15 No 10. We do not have any information regarding when or where Laura Landon met George Eugene White. They had a son, George E. White born in Missouri on 6 March 1856. I was not able to locate them in the census of 1860 or 1870. There were additional children of which I have no record. In the Census of 1900 Laura was recorded as having borne 8 children of which only 2 were then alive. The discrepancies between the age of Laura Landon White Warhurst as given in the various census records and upon her death certificate only add to the amount of confusion in her actual identity. This is compounded by the name of her younger sister whose name appears to be "Laureena" in the census of 1850 in Ohio. The handwriting of the census enumerator has compounded our confusion and lack of positive identity for Laura Landon and her younger sister whose name was perhaps, Laureena. In writing the names of both of these individuals in addition to his handwriting on other names on the same page, he has neglected to "close" the top of the letter a and in most cases his small case " a" often appears as a small case "u". We have not found "Laureena Landon" in any Ohio or other census records. Does the possibility exist that, for what ever reason, Laura Landon has at one time or another been confused with Laureena Landon? The question remains: where was Laura Landon White between 1856 when her son George E. was born and 1899 when her name appears in the St. Joseph Missouri City Directory as the widow of George E. White the elder? You may contact me at: hljames1@EarthLink.net Notify Administrator about this message?
