Elias Lander of Nova Scotia, served 27th Maine Inf

I am seeking more information about Elias Lander of Nova Scotia, who enlisted in the 27th Maine Infantry Regiment on 30 Sept, 1862, deserted two weeks later, and the following year enlisted as a substitute into the 5th NH Infantry under the alias John Smith of New York City, and in April, 1864 transferred to the navy.. He filed for a pension in the 1880's (filed both under Lander and Smith) and mentions these three services. With so common of a name as John Smith, I am having difficulty researching this man.
