A couple of years ago when I started researching my McLean daughters' ancestors and discovered the Robert Land-Phoebe Scott genealogy and history...I realized that there are many descendents of theirs who were scattered to the four winds and who have never been recorded or accounted for. I was aware back then of a couple who lived in Oxford County who piqued my interest a LOT- here is the marriage I found a couple of years ago, but was never able to to figure out who these folks were in the greater scheme of things...(still haven't)- This information was originally published by: ONTARIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY Papers and Records Volume 5, Published in Toronto in 1904 Pages 91-101. A REGISTER OF BAPTISMS AND MARRIAGES GORE AND LONDON DISTRICTS, BY REV. RALPH LEEMING, FROM 1816 TO 1827 Introduction by H.H. ROBERTSON, ESQ., BARRISTER, HAMILTON, ONT. William Land, of the Township of Barton, and Rhody MeCarter, of the Township of Glanford, were married by banns in Glanford on Thursday, the 26th day of November, 1818. I spent most of the day today trying to find info for them on the net, and got semi-lucky, starting with the 1851 census for West Zorra in Oxford County- what I have copied is directly from the online transcription: 9 23 Land Wm farmer U States W Methodist 58 m married yes-female stone house 1 &1 9 24 Land Rhoda N Brunswick W Methodist 57 f married 9 25 Land Abigal Canada W Methodist 30 f single lunatic 9 26 Land Phebe Canada W Methodist 27 f single 9 27 Land Eliza A U States W Methodist 10 f single 9 28 Land Rob't Canada W Methodist 25 m single lunatic 9 29 Land Ma-- thrasher Canada W Methodist 23 m single school 9 30 Land Wm thrasher Canada W Methodist 21 m single I always find the old descriptions of people with handicaps disconcerting. What did the term "lunatic" mean in 1851? It could have been many thing including describing people with chronic illnesses, and even people who were deaf/mute. How sad. Regardless, take a look at the birthplace for Rhoda McCarter Land- yippee! I honestly do think she was yet another daughter of Abigail Land and her second husband Isaiah McCarter. Rhoda died April 19, 1871 @ West Zorra and is buried at the "Abandoned Methodist Cemetery" at West Zorra. Her death reg. also lists her place of birth as New Brunswick. There are awesome photographs online at the Oxford Genweb site of her headstone and some other family members', but not William's headstone. I cannot find death info for him. Abigail Land died January 18, 1878 @ West Zorra. Robert's full name was Robert Henry Land; he died Nov. 15, 1871 and is buried in same cem. as his mother. I don't know what hap. to Phebe Land age 27 on that census, and I have no idea who 10 year old Eliza Land was. I don't know who "Ma...." was although there are ref's to a Maschal Land living in that area- is this the same Maschal Land that I have seen queries for online? William Land age 21 on this census is the same man who married Ann Chenoweth from England. Have names of 2 children for them but there could be others. I do have names of the spouses as well for these two children. William died October 4, 1880 @ West Zorra, his wife Ann died May 9, 1902 @ West Zorra. And a s a bonus I found another son named John born about 1823- he died May 10, 1888 at or near Ferguson, Muskoka District, or Parry Sound. He was married at least twice but I cannot find name of his first wife. He married Grace Richards in the 1870's, and I have names of three of John's children- Wellington Land, have name of his wife and ten children so far; Frederick Land, have wife and 6 children; and Maria Isabelle Land but no further info for her yet. So here's the kicker- I really do believe that Rhoda was the daughter of Abigail Land and her husband Isaiah , but I have no clue at all who her husband William Land could be. This census states he was born in the United States. My database is very very incomplete but the only William Land I have who might "fit" would be William son of John Land and Lillian Skinner. Could he be? (This would make William and Rhoda first cousins). If this is not the case, who is this William Land? And if Rhoda is not the daughter of Abigail, who is she? I do have several more bits and pieces of info that I gathered up today offline, but if anyone has any ideas about the identity of these people, please let me know?! I would also like to know who the first wife was for John Land, son of William and Rhoda. (His second marriage states their names.) If there are typing errors and spelling mistakes in this post, I apologize. It's late and I can't see straight. Oh, also buried at that Abandoned Meth. Cem. @ West Zorra are these little tykes, but I have no idea who their parents are- what do these initials stand for? Children of M. E. & S. I. LAND Rhoda Marrilla born Feb 8, 1865 Died Oct 10 1865 Phebe Theressa born June 12, 1866, died Aug 1, 1866 Mashal Ewen born June 12, 1867 died Aug 15, 1867 Thanks from Nora in Alberta, Canada Notify Administrator about this message?
