Dear Matthew, My Lance family is from nearby Hunterdon County, and my grandfather was Whitfield Hunt Lance, son of Joel Clark and Anna Fritts Lance. My Whitfield was born in 1833 in Hunterdon. When I first started researching the Lance family I probably first found your Whitfield. Have you checked out Jessee R. Lance and Margaret found on the 1850 census in Mansfield, Warren County, NJ? They have a four-year old Whitfield and this would be the correct age for your Whitfield. They also have a two year William as well as a 6 year old Elizabeth and a baby named Martha. I don't know where my information is for this family as I was "barking up the wrong tree" and put it away after failing to make a connection. I remember that I found the marriage record for Jessee and Margaret (Sequin) in Warren County. This record can also be found on-line. Then, interestingly enough, my grandmother was denied a Civil War pension because the Government said that a Joanna was already receiving the pension for Whitfield. Those records are also available on line. My Whitfield Hunt Lance was named for a minister, H. Whitfield Hunt, at the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church in Morris County just across the county line from Hunterdon County. Two good sources for information on the Lances are "The Lantz Family Record" by Jacob W. Lantz, Cedar Springs, Virginia. I found this entire book on line. Not all of the information is correct, so a caution that further research is needed. Then, the book "The Early Germans of New Jersey, Their History, Churches and Genealogies" (can't remember the author) has been very helpful to my reseach. I would be willing to share any information I have with you. My Whitfield's father (Joel) had a brother named Jesse, but his wife's name was Nancy. With all of the similiar names, I would suppose they were related, I just haven't found the connection. Susan Notify Administrator about this message?
