Someone PLEASE tell me I'm on the right track! I'm searching for the father of Thomas Jefferson Mott, b. Oct 12, 1837. We can't find Moses Mott or his son on any census prior to 1900. T.J. Mott was born near Wilmington, NC. Family history says that Moses Mott was French, not English, and that he died in Wilmington. I think he jumped ship in Wilmington, seriously! I believe he was a sailor or a pirate, possibly a passenger, but I doubt it. I have thoroughly researched all of the New Hanover County Motts, and Thomas Jefferson Mott or his father are not connected to those (English) Motts (or Mote). However, we know T.J. Mott WAS born there, near Moore's Creek. I also suspect that he was a blockade runner. He sent his first wife to safety (or she ran away)to NJ where their first child was born in 1865. All his subsequent children were born in FL. Questions are, WHERE is Moses MOTT, and WHY can't I find him? Was he hiding from census takers? Who was T.J. Mott's mother? Can anyone help me find Moses Mott? Thanks, you are all great! You must be . . . you're genealogists! Tracey Edwards Mountain City, TN BTW, I'll do lookups in any town within 50 miles of my home!
