I have a copy of hand written information dated Dec 18th 1907 wriitten by Maraget Lamont Taggart while in Canada learned from Aunt Sadie Lamont.
Here is as written by Margaret Taggart
My father's father's father name was Murdoch Lamont.
My father's name was John Lamont. These were all born in the Isle of Skye Scotland near Portree.Father was born on a farm close by loch [].Father said his grandmother (that is Murdoch's wife) died when Malcolm was small.Father's mothers maiden name was Elizabeth Mcdonald. Her father's name was John. Her mother's maiden name was Margaret McQueen.( I Margaret Lamont Taggart am her namesake) Their oldest son Ronald went to the army to England and died there and his father died in Scotland. Then Margaret McQueen DcDonald; father's grandmother on his mother's side came to Prince Edward Island, America when the rest of the relatives did.Father was sixteen years old when he left Scotland. They all settled in Prince Edward Island.
The following are father's father's sons.He had no daughters.Murdoch, Ronald, Angus, John(who is my father) William, Ewen, and Donald.
Murdoch went to New York and wrote from there once but was never heard from again.
Ronald settled on a farm on P.E.I.
Angus went to the war from Scotland when young.
Ewen married and was a school teacher and composer of hymms.
William became a school teacher never married neither didd father's youngest brother Donald.
Father's first wife's name Kate Nickelson. She died when her first baby was born. It was named Murdoch. This all I know of my father's family.
Fathers name was John Lamont. Mother's maiden name was Sarah Lamont. My brother's and sister's are Margaret (that is me) Effie or Euphamia, Malcolm, Sarah or Sadie, Angus, Elizabeth, Kate, John and Carrie.
Copied from the family record Dec 18 1907
signed Margaret Taggart
Margaret Taggart is my father(James Homer)grandmother on his mother side, Sarah Taggart's mother.
Another statment in our family history file is by Hazel Taylor which is Margaret sister Effie Lamont who married John Taylor daughter. Her statment is as this taken in 1973 by Margaret A Wilson(she is the daughter of Mabel Taggart who is a daughter of Margaret and James Taggart)
Some of the Lamont clan from Inverness, Scotland, came to settle in Prince Edward Island.John married a distant relative, Sarah Lamont, who was 20 years his junior.they bought a farm in Zetland, a rural district not far from Wingham and brough up a large family.Mother said that Grandpa was well educated, a kind and affectionate father. The family move to Ripley after Grandpa died.As a small child, I stood rather in awe of Grandma a statly lady in black always with white at neck and wrists. She sat very erect on a hight backed chair.
Margaret, the eldest child, married a Taggart- a cousin of Dad's, I think, and moved to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where they had a big family mostly girls.
Mother was next (Effie) married John Taylor(dad) and lived on a section of the Taylor farm where Victor and Leonard were born. They moved to Riley to a house a block or so from Grandma's where the rest of us were born.Later we moved to Winghm, lived a couple of doors from Uncle Arthur and Aunt Carrie. After a few years we moved to London.
Malcolm was next in line married Annie Tervet lived on a farm at the edge of Wingham.Annie died, leaving 3 small children who were grown when he married Jennie Long. They lived in Waterford, then London, later in Weston if I remember correctly.
Sarah was at home except for a couple of years at art school.Later she married John Colling, a widower, on a farm, then later they moved to London, near us.
Angus went to Northern Ontario, married and when his wife died, he married here sister. We lost track of them completely, but Uncle Jack kept in touch, and the families enjoyed the association very much.
Elizabeth went to Winnipeg, as some close friends had moved there. She trained as a nurse was kept very busy nursing the second generation and was much beloved. She retired late, lived with us a short time before she died. She was a very wonderful person and an important part in the life of Uncle Jack Lamont's family, Betty being named for her.
Aunt Kate married John McNamara who went through the Presbyterian ministery.I do not remember any of his charges except Drayton, where I visited them. They were in Toronto for years.Aunt Kate was a darling.
Uncle Jack Lamont went to Medical School Toronto, I suppose. He practiced in Brantford, then North Dakota, where married Frances. Was for years the superintendent of the T.B. Sanmatorium in Dunserth. Then the supt. of the mental sanatorium in Grafton.Later he was a short time in Minneapolis before he retired in Oklahoma City, as his son-on-law Chilton Powell (Betty's husband) was the Bishop of Oklahoma. He was a terrifice person.
Aunt Carrie married Arthur Hamilton, a druggist, lived in Wingham, then a sort time in London, they for years in Windsor. She visited us often. We were very fond of her.
We were fortunate in living in London a more or less central spot, so the family dropped in as they came and went. Then too Mother lived to such a good age, that she became a mother figure to all the family.
Grandma Lamont's sister, Rachel (two yeaers younger than Mother) married Eli Jacques and lived in Whitechurch, a village not to far from Wingham.I think there was a son George.Aunt Rachel visited us often in London and we did enjoy her.We got quite a bang out of her decided opinions on every subject.
Now a word to the young who may read this. You have a great heritage. These Lamonts were wonderful people, truely great family.I knew, admired, and loved them all.
Note: Hazel Taylor who wrote the above is a first counsin to Adele Cavanaugh, Sarah(Sadie)Homer, Mabel Wilson, Leland Taggart, etc.She lives in London, Canada where for years she has been a teacher at the Ontario Music Conservatory - piano. When I met her again in 1973 she was sparling, lively, petite woman, warm and loving.
