Friendly greetings to everybody, I recently discovered that the Lamkins m. into the Wilbourn line in 1769. The source for the following info in Northumberland Co. VA is a marriage book, 1661-1810. My questions: 1. Who is this first James Lamkin? Has his line been researched? 2. Are there Lamkins in Goochland Co. VA, 1740s and 1770s? Here is my four-point trail of evidence: First, James Lamkin has a son named James (and others), in Northumberland Co. VA, thus: 1. Lewis: b. Mar 17, 1719 2. James: b. Oct 27, 1722 James and a second wife or another James? 3. Jeremiah: b. Sept 9, 1732 4. Hannah: Dec. 21, 1734 Second, James (#2), who I'm sure is the son of James #1, and Winifred Lamkin have these kids, still in Northumberland Co.: 1. Jeremiah: b. Aug 9, 1743 2. Richard: b. Oct 5, 1745 3. Samson: b. Mar. 22, 1749 4. Hannah: b. Jul. 28, 1751 5. Betty Brown Lamkin: b. Jan 11, 1754 6. James: b. April 20, 1756 7. Janny: b. Mar. 20, 1758 8. Cleophas (Cleopas): b. Feb. 22, 1760 Third, Hannah (#4) and Thomas Wilbourn marry in Goochland Co., VA, Oct. 23, 1769 The date of their marriage fits perfectly, for their children (e.g. our William) are born in the 1770s and later. The only puzzle is why they went to Goochland to marry, when they were established in Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Cos. VA. They must have had connections up in Goochland. Anyway, Hannah was born in 1751 and married in 1769, so she was 18 years old. Thomas was about 20-ish. D. Here Hannah and Thomas are, nestled snugly among her brothers, in Mecklenburg Co. (thanks to Belva Cauthen's hard work. Mecklenburg Co., VA, 1779. Thomas and his wife Hannah sell land. Note that William Wilbourn signs the deed. He is likely Thomas’ older brother. Abstract of the deed: Thomas Wilborn and his wife Hannah of Mecklenburg Co., VA sell to Sampson Lampkin of same county for 100 pounds, 400 acres in Mecklenburg on the south side of Middle Bluestone Creek and bounded by Hunt, Ragsdale. Signed: Thomas (X) Wilborn and Hannah (X) Wilborn. Witnesses: James Lamkin; John Handler; James Lamkin, Jr; William Wilbern / Wilborn. (Deed Book 5, page 303) Next, Mecklenburg Co, VA, 1779. Thomas witnesses this next deed. Thomas and James Hall knew each other, back in VA. And later both reside in Edgefield District, SC. Note Jeremiah Lamkin, too. This is Hannah's brother. Abstract of the deed: James Hall and wife Martha sell to William Lucas of Montgomery Co, MD, for 50 pounds, 300 acres in Mecklenburg Co, VA, on the branches of the Middle Bluestone Creek, being part of 935 acres that was formerly patented to Stephen Evans; and bounded by James Hall; William Harris; Joel Elam; Abraham Crowder; Henry Hastin; Mark Moore; James Hall. signed: James Hall. Witnesses: Jeremiah Lamkin; James Harrison, his mark; Thomas (X) Wilborn. (Deed Book 6, page 4) The four-name combination of Hannah, Samson, Jeremiah, and James is decisive. We're dealing with the right Hannah. She's in Mecklenburg Co. VA, m. to Thomas Wilbourn, both of whom will move to Edgefield District, SC, circa 1799. So here again are my questions. 1. Who is the first James Lamkin, in Northumberland Co. (the first point, above)? 2. Are there Lamkins in Goochland Co. VA, about 1750s-1770s? Any guidance you can give me would be appreciated.
