He took it from his maternal uncle, Nicolas Chauvin dit or de Lafrenière (1676-ca 1749) who left Montréal to settle in Louisiane circa 1700.
Joseph's half brother, Jacques Baron (1693-1768) did the same thing by choosing the "dit" name "Belair". The husband of a sister of Marie-Marthe Chauvin was named Hubert dit Belair...
The first time I noticed that Joseph added the dit name Lafresnière (with a "s") was in 1721 when he first got married... He used it also in 1723 when he purchased his first land in the seigniory of Maskinongé.
