From “Laurens and Newberry Counties South Carolina: Saluda and Little River Settlements 1749-1775; Neighborhood Maps, and Abstracts of Colonial Surveys and Memorials of Land Titles” by Jesse Hogan Motes III and Margaret Peckham Motes; 1994, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Greenville, South Carolina.

Section 8: Little River Above Mudlick Creek

Page 123:

Survey for John Caldwell pursuant to precept dated 2 June 1772; a resurvey of his tract of land on Little River in the District of Ninety Six, originally granted for 700 acres and a surplus of 550 acres. (The plat map contains the following bounding tracts: SE by James Johnston, Golding’s land and Hugh Caldwell; SW by Peter Strosher, Wm. Neely and Martha Moats (see note at end of this abstract); S by Mary Seirs and Samuel Neely; NW by William Neely, Gilbert Turner and Wm. Turner; NE by John Hunter, Jacob Gray and HENRY LAMOR; E by Jacob Gray.) Survey certified 20 Oct. 1772. Wm. Thos. Caldwell D.S. Certified by order of council 7 June 1774. [P13-481:0]. The original plat manuscript (Loose Colonial Plats, filed under “John Caldwell”, SC Archives) shows Matha (not Martha) Moote as the bounding name, which most likely refers to Mathew Motes, who owned this bounding tract.
