Since Gazaway Bugg Lamar, born 1798 was probably one of the best known Lamars of his day, it is most likely that Lamar Gazaway was named after him. G.B. Lamar was a GA steamboat pioneer who later founded a bank in NY, and after the Civil War had begun, he returned to Savannah to found the Importing and Exporting Company of Georgia. Prior to his death in 1874 the U.S. awarded him almost $600,000 for cotton and other property losses that took place when Union troops took over Savannah.
