Patrick: I agree with your suspicion. Although we have no proof certain, it seems most likely that Wm. Bishop Lamar died and was buried near Hawkins. The grave was either unmarked or had a wooden marker that no longer exists. I also agree that it is highly unlikely that a body would have been returned to Maryland.
Had he recovered and returned to MD, I can see no reason why his will would have been probated in both TN and MD. There was no property in TN and thus no need for it to be probated there except that he died there. Unless we find a family letter with some mention of what happened, or a headstone gets discovered, it is a safe assumption that he died and was buried in TN.
