There is a Lakin Bible on Ebay scheduled to end Nov 29th. LAKIN Family Bible 1822 Groton MA A Large Bible from 1822 seemingly owned by the J.R. LAKIN Family with three pages of genealogical information. In between the Old and New Testament are two pages placed by the publisher for “Family Record” One page is filled and the other just a couple of entries. The inscriber has also used the previous ½ page (end of the Aporypha) to fill in with more info. There are some newspaper clippings and some homemade business cards for Jonas R. Lakin of South Boston, Mass. Also a library card for J.S. Lakin. Also a couple of newspaper clippings of a Lakin family death and marriage. Some of the hand written info states: ”The Record of the Brothers and Sisters of Jonas Lakin Father of J.R. Lakin – all born on the homestead North part of Groton Mass.” All 10 siblings have month and day, such as: Wm.(?) Merell(?) borne May 5, 1755 ; also: Isaac, Emmie, Rachel, David, James, Elizabeth, Lemuel, Jonas(1776), Sybell, Also marriages of Jonas to Mary Ransford; and others. Most interesting entry is : Births: Jonas Lakin at Groton Mass. July 16, 1776 He was youngest son of Isaac and great grandson of John Lakin that came from England in 1665 (or ’55) and one of the first settlers of Groton Mass. Devotes one page of info on the Jonas Lakin (1776) family such as his two wives Mary Ransford and Sarah Griffin and his children by each of them. Some of those children’s deaths are recorded as well A very plain Family Bible, leather bound and well worn. The last 8 pages are rodent eaten but I believe that it is otherwise intact. All pages are well foxed throughout. Published and sold by W. Greenough, Lunenburg, Massachusetts in 1822 Examining the records and clippings within, I have come to the conclusion that the owners of this Bible lived in Groton, Boston, South Boston, Quincy, Bridgewater, North Fairhaven, Charlestown and Pepperell. The earliest entry date in this Bible is 1755 and the latest is 1922. Most dates are in the 1800’s There is card pinned into a front page that has “Mary Lakin -Oct. 18, 1835-Edw. Otherman” with a printed psalm passage. Is this a wedding date or death date? Another clipping is a want ad reading: “Collector. The subscriber will attend to the collecting of bills, settling accounts, etc., in this city or vicinity. Satisfactory references given. Apply at The Mattapan Register office, or at 98 Broadway, South Boston, Jan 14. 1860. J. R. Lakin.” A penciled notation on a poem to “The Little Sleeper” says, “Clipt from the Dispatch a right week after the death of Poore Baby Sylvanus. J. R. Lakin.” “ This book is heavy -6 lbs.-so USPS media mail will be $5 Notify Administrator about this message?
