Have you written for a copy of his birth record? hat might give you his father's age at the time, which would give you a birth year estimate.
I used
"Edward Lakes" Estill
in www.google.com (note qoutes0 and found
http://www.geocities.com/qatballou_laura/family_branches/lax_lakes_lake.htm
which has a lot of LAX/LAKES people born in Estill and Jackson Counties, KY, one of whom is Edward b. 1875, which would have him 42 in 1917, which is up there but possible. The lady doesn't have anything else on Edward at all.
Reversing the argument to
"Lakes, Edward" Estill
got me a page that doesn't exist, but Google caches pages, so I looked at it.

d. 4 MAR 1917 in Jackson Co, KY
father: Gabbard, Edward (~1799 - >1880)
mother: Bowman, Sarah (1798 - 1880)

- m. 28 FEB 1848 in Madison Co, KY
----------child: Lakes, Jacob (~1850 - )
----------child: Lakes, Mary Jane (~1852 - )
----------child: Lakes, Edward (1855 - 1947)
----------child: Lakes, Charles Lewis (1858 - )
----------child: Lakes, William D.
----------child: Lakes, John
----------child: Lakes, Deborah L.
----------child: Lakes, James Elbert (1864 - )
This one would have been 62 in 1917, which is pushing it for a father but could be a grandfather or grand uncle.
I didn't repeat the exercise with Lucy, but you could.
