To my knowledge, "Gravesend Settlers: Ancestors and Descendants," a manuscript by William H. Stillwell (1832-1895) held by The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, has never been published. One must proceed with great caution when using Stillwell's manuscript; it is a vexing mix of the known, the possible and the impossible. It is evident that Teunis G. Bergen relied heavily on Stillwell's manuscript in the preparation of Early Settlers of Kings County. Every statement made by Stillwell and Bergen must be validated. For an example of the significant corrections that will be found through such analysis, please refer my series on the "The Griggs Family of Gravesend and New Jersey," as published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. (Volumes 136-137 [October 2005-April 2006]). Publishing a fully annotated and corrected copy of Stillwell's manuscript would be a very worthwhile project. I have no intention of tackling that challenge but I hope that others will be inspired to do so! With that goal in mind, I have posted Stillwell's accounts of the LAKE, SPICER and WILKINS families at my web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/lake/gravesend_settlers_lake.pdf http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/spicer/gravesend_settlers_spicer.pdf http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/wilkins/gravesend_settlers_wilkins.pdf Unfortunately, I do not have excerpts for other families but the manuscript probably includes many of the families listed at these sites: http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/moodygrave/LadyMoody.htm http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Settlement_of_Gravesend%2C_Long_Island I will be happy to post additional excerpts from "Gravesend Settlers" if anyone is able to provide them. Within Adobe(c) Reader(c), select View \ Rotate View \ Clockwise and then select View \ Zoom \ Fit Width to view this document as intended. The 8.5" x 14" page size of the photocopies available to me has been retained; however, if you desire, you may print these documents on 8.5" x 11" paper by selecting File \ Print \ Page Scaling \ Fit to Printable Area. Please contact me if you are interested in sharing scholarly research on "Gravesend Settlers," especially the early generations of the GRIGGS, GULICK, LAKE, OPDYCK/UPDIKE, SPICER and WILLIAMSON families.
