You say you are related to a Thomas Lake. I have this information in our family records, about a Thomas:

THOMAS LAKE was born in 1666, in Derbyshire, England. According to John Peet, 1597-1684 of Stratford, CT, and His Descendents, by Terry Charles Peet, Thomas was born February 9, 1656.

There were apparently three Thomas Lakes alive around that time. There have been many theories as to the identity of this Thomas Lake, the one who married Sarah Peate. One of them is that he was the son of Henry Lake of Massachusetts/Rhode Island and some databases reflect this link. Nevertheless, today on the internet many databases have gotten information terribly mixed up. As of now I don't have convincing evidence that Henry Lake was OUR family's Thomas Lake's father. In fact there is significant evidence that Henry was not his father.

Others say our family's Thomas Lake is the son of Capt. Thomas Lake of Boston and Mary Goodyear; however there is substantial evidence to suggest they were not part of our branch of the family tree.

A third THOMAS LAKE can be found in history books who was of Stratford, CT. Many online genealogies try to link him into one of the above families. The information below is in agreement with the best historical information available today, and unfortunately we still don’t know who Thomas Lake’s parents were.

THOMAS LAKE died between 1708 and 1757, in Stratford, CT. He married SARAH PEATE in 1688, in Stratford, CT. SARAH, according to Ancient History of Woodbury, Connecticut, from the first Indian Deed in 1659 to 1879, Volume III, by William Cothren (1869, not in copyright), and confirmed by records at Stanford, CT, was born in Stratford, Connecticut, on October 3, 1665. The same book records that her brother Samuel was born in Stratford on December 26, 1663; their father was listed as John Peate; mother Sarah Osborn ; Sarah died between 1707 and 1760 [1728] in Stratford, CT. [Other records show her as spelling her name Sarah Peck.]

The History of Fairfield County, Connecticut (not in copyright) lists the following LAKE families as among the earliest settlers, “who were here as early as 1731” (even though they were living there in the 1600s!): Thomas Lake, Edward Lake, David Lake.

Are you acquainted with www.archive.org? You can look up the very old books I named, above, and others, and do a search for the names you're looking for. It's an amazing resource. I have a feeling you're looking for a Thomas Lake born later than the Thomas Lake above, and a John. Perhaps you can find more info about the correct Lake generation.

Get back to me if I can be of more help. I'll do some more searching for you, too, and get back to you with anything I find.

LK Thomas
