I have the Wheeling Directory for the year 1839, and there is no one with the surname Lake included...
Have you looked at the Ohio County Federal Census for 1840? I know that Gibson would not be enumerated by name, but he will be included by age and sex in the household of his parents....all census are rentable for a small fee, from the LDS, at your local Family History Center. (remember, though, in 1840, there was no WV....just Virginia).
