As all this is pretty 'recent history', surely there are people alive who knew these people....(he only died in '96)....are you parents alive? Don't they know anything of your father's family? How about uncles and aunts? or great aunts or uncles? This is generally the way to get started in genealogy...ask everyone alive what they know...and, write it down. Don't accept what is told you as fact, but clues to be followed up on.
