Henry Ruffner Laird b. 1841 Kerrs Creek Va.of an old Va. family. (Have additional info on him dating circa Civil War and beyond if you desire)
H.R. Laird married Sarah H. McCluer who was born July 14, 1844 near Lexington Va. Sarah was the daughter of Robert C. and Mary Parry McCluer. H.R. and Sarah gave birth to: Mary McCluer Laird Apr.3 1870 in Lee County Va.;John Harvey Laird Nov.1,1872 in Black Walnut, Halifax Co.,Va; Lilla Preston Laird Nov 19,1874 in Arbuckle, Mason Co. W.Va.; Henry Robert Laird July 14,1877 in Fort Spring W.Va.; Arthur Mann Laird Feb.26,1881 in Alderson, Monroe County W.Va. (H.R. fought in the Civil War from its conception until the end of the war and then concluded his studies at Union Theological Seminary and was ordained a Presbyterian Minister. He traveled extensively throughout Va,W.Va,Kentucky and Texas in his ministry.)
One of his sons, John Harvey wed Helen Wood Hill in Charleston, W.Va. on Oct. 14,1896 and they had a son, James Huling Laird who was born on July 11, 1877 in Mt. Carbon, W.Va. H.R.'s daughter wed Lenoir Young Smith Feb. 19,1893 in Beeville, TX. They had two children: Hillis Amanda Smith born Dec 11,1895 in Beeville, Tx. who died before the age of two and Ruffner Merriweather Smith Dec. 2,1912 in Bay City, TX. At the age of three L.Y. and Lilla Smith moved to Kentucky with Ruffner. I am one of two daughters of Ruffner, Lilla Joann Smith Plumlee and my eldest sister is Nancy Laird Smith Nichols. I live in Texas and she lives in Kentucky.
