STEPS IN CONNECTING BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LAIR TO JACOB LAIR

Fact: Our Ben Lair is finally found as a 9 yr old boy in the 1860 census living with Benjamin and Charlotte (Kessler) Bond in Miami Co., Harrison Township, Indiana

Family Lore: Ben Lair told the story that he was a "bonded boy".

Fact: The only other Lair found in the entire Miami Co., IN 1860 census, was that of a Roenna Lair, age 11 (b. abt 1849), living with Rowena/Roany (Welch) and Evan Hosier and family in Miami Co., Jackson Township, Indiana.

Family Lore: Ben Lair told his Oklahoma raised family that he had a sister.

Fact: There is only one Lair family in Miami Co., Indiana, in the 1850 census, that of Jac C. Lair b. in OH and wife Elizabeth in Jackson Township. They have a 7 month old daughter, Elizabeth (b. abt 1849). Living beside the Lair family is a David T. Kessler. Also nearby in the 1850 census is a John T. Kessler with daughter Charlotte; and living beside them is a Benjamin Bond. Remember Ben and Charlotte Bond were "foster" parents of our Ben Lair. They operated a "General Store". I have in my notes from the Oklahoma Lairs that our Ben Lair operated a general store (somewhat of a pawn shop?) in Sand Springs, OK for a number of years...a trade he probably learned as a very young "bonded" boy working for the Bonds in their store back in Miami Co., Indiana.

Family Lore: Ben Lair said his father had been in the Civil War.

Fact: In the 1850 Miami Co., IN census, Jac C. Laire was age 29. This makes him b. abt 1821. The Civil War Pension papers found for Jacob Laire of Scioto Co., OH were located. According to the pension records, Jacob was b. March of 1820.

Fact: In the pesion papers Jacob Laire said he had been married twice. Scioto Co., OH marriage records show "Jacob C. Laire m. Elizabeth Craigh 04 Jun 1845 and married Mary Ann Stephens 06 Apr 1869 Scioto Co., OH".( Dixie Note: I believe Jacob's first wife died (or left him?), after which Jacob Laire left his children in care of foster families and went back to Ohio. It was from that state he enlisted to fight in the Civil War.)

Fact: In the Civil War Pension Papers for Jacob Laire of Scioto Co., OH it mentions (unforunately not by name) that Jacob had 2 children, but neither were claimants to his pension. He says that child #1 was the age of 50 in 1898, making child #1 b. abt 1849. Elizabeth/Roenna Lair from the 1850 & 1860 Miami Co., IN census's was b. abt 1849.) Jacob states that child #2 was the age of 48, making child #2 b. abt 1850. Our Ben Lair was b. June 17, 1851.

Fact: One witness who signs the Civil War Pension papers, attesting to Jacob Laire's good character and honesty in filling out the information is Miranda Searl. Miranda Searl (male) has a sister Louisa who married Huron Aldrich. Huron had a brother, Erie Aldrich, who married Mary "Polly" Lair. Mary "Polly" Lair Aldrich was the daughter if Benjamin Laire and Charlotte Davis of Scioto Co., OH. This Benjamin and Charlotte Laire had a son Jacob who would be the right age to be the Jacob of the Scioto Co., OH pension papers and the Jac C. Lair of 1850 Miami Co., IN.

Another item of interest: The child who I think is our Ben Lair's sister: Elizabeth/Roenna Lair went to live with the family of Evan & Roany (Welsh) Hosier. Roany Welsh is probably Roan Craig who married Ellmore Welsh on Sept. 17, 1838 in Scioto Co., OH. Both Roany Craig Welsh Hosier and Elizabeth Craigh Lair were born in Missouri, and really unique state to be born in considering the Ohio/Indiana path. I speculate the 2 were sisters.
