Would anyone know if Valentine had a brother Frederick that went by the name of "Lawyer"? Lahr, Lawyer, Lower, Layer, ect are soundex varations of the same German name. Frederick and Catherine Lawyer born about 1800-1815 were said to be from Germany, imigrating before 1834, living near Wilmot, Stark County Ohio, then migrating to Whiteside County Illinois about 1854. Whiteside County was formed in 1836 out of Jo Daviess and Henry Counties.
I have a letter written in 1866 by I assume is Catherine Lawyer to a daughter Elizabeth. She names a "Sliffer" or "Slifler" family only to say that they were all ok.
The 1880 Butler County County Iowa census for Augustus Lahr has a "High" (sic) Slifer, age 24 born Wurtenburg working for them. Also a daughter Elizabeth.
Thank you
Wes Hart
