Neil,
Just a suggestion since you are going back that far..
Nicolas' last name was probably written the same as my ancestors until the mid-1800's-in fact, we probably share the same immigrating relative, Andre Mignier dit Lagace, who came to Canada in 1665.You will find a lot more about Nicolas by using the surname Mignier dit Lagace.I have also found quite a bit just using the original surname, Mignier.Andre's father, Michel, in France used either of those.I'm not sure when exactly the name was changed (hence, the meaning of the word, "dit" meant something like "change to".)There is quite a bit of free info available on the Mignier, Mignier dit Lagace, Lagace, Lagasse forums at Ancestry.com and the Rootsweb message boards.Search under those surnames.
There is a wealth of info regarding the names in the WorldConnect.com family trees, but I caution you, as a fellow amateur genealogist, that some of the family trees there aren't properly sourced so if you find some information about your ancestors and the tree is not properly sourced, don't use what you find there as true information...just as guidelines.I have seen the name of Nicolas in those places many times over.I believe that Nicolas may be a descendant of Andre's younger son, Michel. (not to be confused with the grandfather, Michel, who stayed in France). The other son (the oldest) of Jacquette Michel and Andre Mignier dit Lagace, was Andre, (I refer to him as "Jr". who I am descended from.I've corresponded with many of his descendants over the years in our effort to see who our common ancestor was. ha!If I have gotten you completely confused here, please feel free to write to me at [email protected].
Best wishes,
Nanette Lagasse Gaither
