Mrs. George W. (Still) Lafollette ~ Ft. Madison
Decatur County Journal
September 9, l9l5
J.M. STILL was born in Decatur County on February 2, l854, and has
always lived in the same county. He departed this life Monday evening,
August 30, l9l5.
He came to Leon in the year l884, where he has since resided. He was
united in marriage to MARY J. MOAD on December 4, l872. To this union
fourteen children were born, nine of whom with the widow survive him.
They are D.N. STILL, of Healdsburg, California; MRS. BERT BALLOU, of
Kellerton; MRS. A.R. FARNES, of Broadview, Montana; MRS. GUY BREMER, of
Newton, Iowa; ROY STILL, Clarinda; JOE G. STILL and MRS. EARL RUSK, of
Mt. Ayr; J.L. and NINA STILL, of Leon. Besides these he leaves four
brothers and two sisters, CHRISTOPHER STILL, of Des Moines, J.W. and
R.E., of Cainsville, Mo.; JESSE, of Woodland, and two sisters, MRS.
REBECCA COZAD, of near Leon, and MRS. GEO. W. LAFOLLETTE, of Ft.
Madison. He was sixty-one years, six months and twenty-eight days of
age.
He moved with his family to Leon in the year of l882, where he has since
resided. He united with the Advent Church in l886, being a charter
member, and has since lived a devout Christian. He worked for J.A.
Harris & Co. for about twenty-eight years at the marble and granite
works, being faithful to any work entrusted to his care.
The funeral was held at the Christian Advent Church where a large
audience was gathered to show their sympathy with the family. Loving
hands had brought many flowers. Thus showing their respect to the
sorrowing family. At the request of the deceased the writer conducted
the services by reading from I Cor. l5 chapter, l4 to 29 verses, and
prayer. A short talk was given, the subject being "What is man,"
quoting from Hebrews 2:6. The history given in the Bible is the only
reasonable theory of his origin. The same power that created the world,
land and sea, sun, moon and stars and gives life to every living
creature did create man and set him over the works of his hands. The
scriptures do not teach that he was created with an immortal soul to
live in Heaven or hell. But a living soul, a natural man, I Cor. l5
chapter, verses 45 to 46. The doctrine that man was created immortal
was first taught by a heathen philosopher called Socratese about 400
years B.C. and became very popular. But as the light of reason has been
put into use, it has taken the place of tradition and ignorance and a
deeper revelation of the word of God by sober thinking men of God. Have
found that eternal or immortal life is the gift of God through Christ:
Rom. 6:23, John l7:2, John 9:28. The wicked will be destroyed: Malachi
4:l, Matt. l3:40, Rev. 2l:8. This is eternal everlasting death. The
punishment of the disobedient are in this life and to die without hope
of the life to come. This was the faith of BROTHER STILL. His was a
Godly life. He was a kind and loving husband and father, always ready
to minister to the needs of others and loved by all who knew him. He
loved the house of prayer, without fear of hell or eternal torment. His
was a loving service. He died in hope of a glorious resurrection of the
mortal body, where there will be no more death, neither sorrow, crying
nor pain. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
